Here Are Ten Tips That Will Make Buying and Putting in New Kitchen Cabinets a Breeze

The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) certification process involves putting the cabinets through rigorous tests designed to simulate years of everyday use. Without blistering or discoloration, certified cabinets are subjected to humidity, temperatures from -5 degrees to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and ordinary condiments like vinegar, coffee, and ketchup.

Second, it’s helpful to be fluent in kitchen cabinet jargon. Knowing that stock and semi-stock cabinets are the most commonly purchased options is crucial. Stock cabinets are the most popular option because of their inexpensive cost, wide availability, and an endless supply of accessories and hardware. There is a broader selection of available sizes, finishes, and door types with semi-stock cabinets. Premium cabinets can be tailored to fit your needs in form and function. On the downside, custom cabinets typically take 12 weeks to finish and cost anywhere from $12,000 to $75,000, depending on the number of cabinets ordered, level of detail, features, and quality of the materials used.

Third, I think adding personal touches to your kitchen is crucial while keeping the room’s intended use in mind. If you have a can of tomato sauce stashed far in the back of the cabinet, you can get to it without banging your palm on the shelf because most modern cabinets have full-extension roll-out shelves. Large drawers in the base provide storage for pots, pans, and other bulky cooking tools, eliminating the need to store these items in the oven, as I’ve observed many customers doing.

Fourth, I think it’s just as crucial to pick the right style as it is to pick the right features. Oak and maple are two examples of light-colored woods that make a kitchen feel more airy and spacious. A more dramatic impression is achieved with darker woods like cherry and mahogany. Most manufacturers offer turned-leg parts that resemble furniture to lighten the appearance of cabinets. Kitchens can be visually united with the addition of appliance trim kits.

Fifth, make it a priority to know the precise composition of your cabinets. The stronger the cabinet’s box, the better. I recommend using thick, sturdy boxes with at least a half-inch of wall thickness for optimal stability and screwing them into the studs. While most modern cabinets are constructed from MDF or OSB, I like those constructed from plywood using traditional joinery techniques like dado or mortise joints, corner braces built from metal or wood, and drawer boxes constructed using dovetail joints. These can only be found in custom cabinets and typically cost significantly more than cabinets from a big box retailer; however, the adage “You get what you pay for” rings especially true in this circumstance.

Before leaving the store with new cabinets, buy a repair kit for future repairs and fixes. You can fix dents and dings with the standard repair kit’s colored wax, putty, or markers. Because they wear out so quickly, hinges and drawer slides are two components of which you should always have a few extras.

Seven, keep it together. Drywall screws can break beneath the weight of the upper cabinets, so if you’re doing the installation yourself, use two 1/2-inch deck screws instead. on addition, studs on a wall are typically 16-18 inches apart, so make sure to screw your cabinets into them. Cabinet installation is best left to the pros because cutting into the wall and constructing a support brace may be necessary. I can’t tell you how often customers have phoned us for assistance after attempting to install their cabinets or having handyman Harry hang them, only to have everything crash to the floor, including the counter, cabinets, contents, and possibly the wall.

If you’re dead set on DIY, I recommend screwing a 1×3 cleat along the line at the base of your wall cabinets. This will help keep them from crashing to the floor when you put them in the cabinets. Two persons are recommended for installing this range hood. However, cabinet jacks make it feasible to do so alone.

Make sure your cabinets are level and plumb at all times. 9. It’s easier to install and ensure everything is level if you clamp a row of cabinets together on the floor and then attach them with wood screws.

If you or a professional company plan to replace your existing cabinets, you should not simply tear them down or let others do so. Instead, consider donating them to a charity like Habitat for Humanity or a similar organization that will give them a new home and use them to build shelters for the homeless.

About eighteen months ago, we started a business assembling and installing kitchen cabinets. In that time, we’ve put in countless cabinets and gleaned a wealth of knowledge that we think is essential for anyone considering doing the same.
